This is a book that covers the history of Western music. Although it's a bit old since the 10th edition is currently available, it's still incredibly comprehensive and I think it will satisfy your curiosity.
The English is at a level that can be read if you've studied it to a reasonable degree, and I feel that the author has tried to use easy-to-understand phrasing.
In the end, I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume and didn't read it much, so I hope it will go to someone who is interested.
