I found this at an estate sale so I do not have anymore information other than the Wikipedia piece of paper that was stuffed inside the cap. The woman used to own an antique store.
It states that, among many other facts, that the HMS Hermes (95) was the first purpose built aircraft carrier in the world to be launched in 1919. She was sunk in a Japanese air attack in 1942.
I can say that this cap is definitely older. It has no air hole grommets or chin strap.
The cloth tally band reads HMS HERMES, embroidered in gold onto a black cap tally. The writing is in excellent condition considering it's age.
The inside shows wear and is dirty, not sure if from storage or use.
The caps material is thick, dense and heavy duty, almost like a sturdy leather feel, but it's not leather. It's outside integrity is completely intact, sewing seams etc.. Dirty, but intact.
The cap is mis-shaped, again, assuming from being stored.
