This is a pair of mid to late 20th Century (1940-1990) lithograph framed prints. Originally from the Victorian era, these botanical colored etchings by Vershaffelt.
The exploration of the New World coincided with a growing demand in Europe for exotic flora as species and as a basis for hybridisation. Among the greatest flower breeders and importers in the period 1840-1860 were the Belgian growers. Vershaffelt. To sell the plants they supplied, they produced a series of rare coloured lithographic plates, which they enhanced with hand touching in colour and the surface application of lacquer after the application of the color. The plates are rare. Among them are attractive renderings of New World natives on their first importation to Europe.
